Chromium

Time for another installment in the "Periodic Table of the Dragons!"

Here is some info about Chromium:

The name 'Chromium' comes from the Greek 'chrōma,' meaning 'color.'

While the metal itself is silvery-metallic, chromium compounds can take on various colors.

It is resistant to corrosion, and is mixed with steel to make 'stainless steel.' Chrome plating is another use for the metal.

Chromium, one of the transition metals, can exist in several oxidation states: +1, +2, +3, +4, +5 and +6. The +3 and +6 forms are the ones most commonly observed.

In large amounts, chromium (especially chromium(VI)) can be toxic and carcinogenic.

I wanted to represent not only the silvery metal probably everyone is familiar with, but also the range of colors that chromium compounds can take on. (Not all of the feather colors correspond to a chromium compound though...unless you want to think of them as one compound with another as an impurity...or something... )

I had originally wanted to give him chrome-metallic skin, but lost interest somewhere during the coloring process...
